Exploring Paradise: Your Ultimate Guide to the Big Island of Hawaii

"There's always a sunrise and always a sunset and it's up to you to choose to be there for it." – Cheryl Strayed
This vacation was jam-packed with adventures! Let's dive into some tips and highlights without overwhelming you.
Our Flight:
Living in the San Francisco Bay Area, Hawaii is our go-to quick getaway, just a five-hour flight from San Francisco International Airport. Compare that to the longer flights to other destinations, and you've got yourself an easy island vacation without the exhausting travel time.
Now, here's where the excitement kicks in—picture this: First Class tickets! Yep, we were gifted with those luxurious seats, and boy, were we thrilled! First-time experience, and let me tell you, having some elbow room and extra leg space felt like a dream come true.
So, trying to play it cool, we put on our best 'classy' faces, but truth be told, our excitement was probably written all over us. Flying with Alaskan Airlines for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised. The entire experience was smooth sailing, and their customer service was top-notch. The flight attendants were genuinely nice and seemed to genuinely enjoy their work!
As soon as we settled into our seats, we found recyclable boxed water ready for us, and mimosas were served even before takeoff—talk about a great start! Blankets, footrests, storage compartments, and tray tables with nifty phone holders—the works! And a bonus: I opted for in-flight Wi-Fi for a small fee so we could catch up on our Netflix lists. Can't beat watching your favorite shows at 35,000 feet!
Here we are with our nerdy excited selves!!
A smooth flight is always a win, right? No bumps, just smooth sailing—yippee! And let's talk about the food – it was a delightful surprise! Pro tip: if you have the chance to pick your in-flight meal ahead, take it! I went for the pork Benedict, and oh boy, it was out of this world! Trust me, following those guidelines and choosing your meal a couple of weeks before takeoff can be a game-changer for your taste buds during the flight!

Touching down at Kona International Airport was an experience in itself! Picture this: stepping off the plane onto the tarmac and strolling into an open-air airport. It's a pretty cool setup, but I've gotta say, it seems like it's straight out of the 70s – not much updating in sight. The airport was tiny, and I mean tiny. Just two baggage claim areas, and when two planes arrive back-to-back, it's like a sardine can in there!
Now, in true fashion, we may have gone a tad overboard with packing – two bags each! But hey, with the first-class tickets came the golden ticket of two free bags per person, so it was a no-brainer! Why hold back when you've got that luggage allowance? Pack it in!
Transportation:
Discovering the expanse of the island, we quickly realized that wheels were a must for our adventure. But rental car prices were sky-high, nearly matching our plane tickets! Nope, not happening. Cue the research mode!
Enter TURO—an absolute game-changer! It's like the AirBnB of cars! Brilliant, right? Anyone can list their vehicle for others to rent. Genius! After browsing through, we found Gabriela's sweet ride, the perfect fit for our week-long escapade (check it out here). Gabriela, our incredible car host, was a dream—communicative, flexible, and super prepared. She hooked us up with phone chargers, a phone holder, an umbrella, and we even added two beach chairs to the mix. And get this—her car was waiting for us in the airport parking lot, complete with a lockbox for the keys. Seamless.
We loaded up our gear, hopped in, and hit the road! Cheers to TURO for saving the day and making our island exploration possible!
Accommodations:
Staying at the Kona Coast Resort was a game-changer for our trip. We've been part of a vacation club for two decades, but using our points for the Big Island was a first. When we saw the openings, we jumped on it, landing a sweet penthouse one-bedroom condo with a gorgeous side view of the ocean from our balcony. I'm far from a picky traveler, and let me tell you why. Volunteering in impoverished places teaches you to cherish any accommodations—luxury or not. Someone asked if we requested a better view, but we felt incredibly blessed with what we had and savored every moment. Our condo was a gem—full kitchen, washer and dryer, spacious bathroom, and a walk-in closet. Plus, we had a Costco nearby! Cue the shopping spree for breakfast supplies: fresh pineapple, apple banana, guava muffins, and POG juice. Yum!
One big travel rule for us: budget for at least one fancy meal out, the dress-up-and-splurge kind. But we're strategic; it's all planned. However, a hack we've learned over our 18 years of marriage: don't travel beyond your means. Coming back to a mountain of debt? Not our style. If you're swiping credit cards for points, ensure it's paid off promptly post-trip. Traveling shouldn't break the bank.
Here's a tip for the Kona Coast Resort: room requests for two personalities. Quiet seekers, aim away from the coast and pool. Action enthusiasts, go for the coast and pool proximity. Our room was central but serene, a perfect balance. The Sunset Terrace, part of the property, had great food, and Mike, the owner, is a gem. His insights about the island were invaluable. The Sunset Terrace, true to its name, offered breathtaking views of—you guessed it—the sunset. Cheers to the staff for their grace under pressure, dealing with all sorts with unwavering friendliness. And when they say "Sunset Terrace," they really mean it! The sunsets were simply mesmerizing.
Things to Do:
While lounging on a beach all day can be incredibly relaxing, making the effort to fly somewhere often comes with the desire to fully embrace and experience everything that destination has to offer. Traveling is about immersing yourself in new cultures, exploring diverse landscapes, tasting local cuisines, engaging in exciting activities, and creating lasting memories. It's about stepping out of your comfort zone, discovering hidden gems, and making the most out of every moment. Whether it's delving into historical sites, embarking on thrilling adventures, or simply connecting with locals and their way of life, the essence of travel lies in experiencing the richness and diversity of a place to its fullest. After all, the joy of travel is in the exploration and discovery of the world around us!
Greenwell Farms: When you're in the Kona Coffee capital, a visit to the coffee farms is an absolute must! But hold onto your hats because the weather in Kona is quite the trickster. Down by the ocean, it could be all sunshine and toasty warmth, making you reach for your sunscreen and shades. But here's the plot twist: venture up into the hills, and suddenly, you find yourself in a whole different world – dark clouds looming overhead and surprise rain showers! It's like Mother Nature's own magic show, so be prepared for a weather rollercoaster as you navigate through Kona's hills!

The beauty of that plantation was next-level – seriously, it was like stepping into a green wonderland! And let me tell you, no camera could truly capture the lush, vibrant essence of that place.
Here's a hot tip (literally!): if you're sipping on freshly brewed coffee while waiting for the tour to kick off, take it slow! I learned the hard way and ended up burning my tongue. Yep, that coffee was piping hot – lesson learned to savor slowly!
Now, when you're gearing up for the tour, remember to put on your trusty, sturdy tennis shoes. Trust me, you're going to thank yourself for this choice. The terrain can get a bit messy, with wet patches and uneven ground. Plus, there are some uphill and downhill stretches that'll give your calves a workout.
But here's the thing – it's all totally worth it! The guided walk/hike through this terrain is an adventure in itself. And the cherry on top? The staff! These folks are like walking encyclopedias of coffee knowledge, and their passion for what they do shines through. You'll walk away not just caffeinated but with a whole new appreciation for those humble coffee beans!

These coffee beans in their drying process are like little nuggets of future wake-up juice! Isn't it fascinating to think about how, centuries ago, someone stumbled upon the idea of prying open these berries, snatching the beans, drying them out, roasting them to perfection, and voilà – coffee became one of the world's most beloved drinks!
But here's the kicker: during our tour, I had a revelation. I tried the coffee black, without my usual Agave Nectar, Coconut Sugar, and Almond Milk. And guess what? It was surprisingly good! It got me thinking, am I truly a coffee enthusiast or just addicted to all the yummy extras that I usually pour into it? Food for thought, right?
Here's a life hack that never fails me: kindness. Seriously, it's my number one travel tip and an all-around golden rule. Being friendly and kind to everyone, especially those in customer service roles, can open unexpected doors. Case in point: after the tour ended, we hung around, chatting with our guide. Turns out, he had a wealth of insider tips on must-see places and hidden gems. If we had rushed off, we'd have missed out on those recommendations and the tip to visit the Puna Chocolate Farm!
Lesson learned: take time to connect with people! It's amazing what favors, tips, and unexpected opportunities might come your way. Speaking of unexpected beauty, the plantation was not just about coffee; it was a feast for the eyes too! Gorgeous flowers, lush trees, and can we talk about the most picture-perfect pineapples I've ever laid eyes on? It was a visual treat in every sense!
Puna Chocolate Farm: Absolutely! There's no arm-twisting needed when it comes to chocolate, right? And let me tell you, the journey to this farm is an adventure in itself! Buckle up because it's a fun drive that takes you up the mountain, adding a whole new level of excitement to your chocolate-seeking expedition. As you wind your way up, the anticipation builds, and you know you're in for a treat – both from the stunning views along the way and, of course, the delightful chocolate waiting for you at the farm!

The tour was a hands-on experience from start to finish! We got to dive right in and taste everything nature had to offer. Picture this: plucking Macadamia Nuts straight off the trees, cracking them open, and savoring their deliciousness. It was like having a backstage pass to the flavors of the orchard!
But here's a little advice from our adventure: beware the KuKui Nut! Rumor has it, this nut packs a powerful punch as a laxative. So, maybe let's stick to using that one for beauty products, shall we? Safety first!
Now, let's talk about the unexpected guests of honor – the chickens and roosters roaming around freely. Those feathered friends were everywhere! But hold on tight because these bold birds like to pull off surprise performances. Imagine minding your own business, and suddenly, a rooster decides to play the role of an unexpected acrobat, leaping down from a tree branch right in front of you! Talk about getting a shock!
And speaking of these creatures, take a gander at this majestic rooster! Isn't it a sight to behold? With its vibrant feathers and regal strut, it's like a walking work of art amidst this lively setting. Beauty truly comes in all shapes, sizes, and feathered forms!
What an adventure! On our tour, we got to crack open cacao pods using a rock and taste the seeds inside. It was like discovering a hidden treasure! And let me tell you, those seeds were incredibly tasty! The burst of flavors was mind-blowing – sweet and a little bit bitter, all at once. Eating fresh cacao seeds straight from the pod was an absolute treat!
As our adventure wound down, little did we know that the sweetest surprise was waiting for us – a chocolate tasting extravaganza that took our taste buds on a heavenly journey! Let me tell you, it was an experience that left a mark on my chocolate-loving soul.
Picture this: a delightful chocolate tasting that's nothing short of a divine indulgence.
I'm not exaggerating when I say it was the best chocolate I've ever had. Each piece was a symphony of flavors, an explosion of cocoa perfection that left us craving for more.
And the fun doesn't stop there! Before bidding adieu to this cocoa paradise, we entered a charming little gift shop offering an array of different chocolates. It was a chocoholic's dream come true! However, as luck would have it, they ran out of stock that day. But fear not, fellow chocolate enthusiasts, they've got another shop in town, conveniently nestled near Costco.
Now, this isn't just any ordinary shop. Oh no, it's a chocolate haven with the most adorable bar where you can treat yourself to a cup of joe, indulge in a steaming hot cocoa, or even sip on a tempting chocolate martini!
We're the type of folks who strike up conversations with everyone we meet. Lo and behold, we met a talented girl working there. Turns out, she's on a mission, building her portfolio in content creation and design. We thought, "Hey, why not spread the love?" So, we connected her with our new friends over at Sunset Terrace, hoping she could sprinkle some magic and help them promote their offerings a little more.
So there you have it – a sweet ending to our adventure filled with mouthwatering chocolates.
Let's talk about an adventure that's both awe-inspiring and a bit mind-boggling – the volcanic marvels that make up the beautiful islands of Hawaii.
One of the most striking sights we encountered was the remarkable volcanic landscape. It's mind-blowing to realize that these entire islands are formed by volcanic activity. Picture yourself standing amidst this raw, rugged beauty, and it hits you – this is how these stunning islands came into existence!
Now, for all you hiking enthusiasts out there, listen up! We heard whispers about some fantastic trails in the area. Unfortunately, we weren't fully prepared for a hiking adventure that day, and time wasn't on our side. But fear not, we've made a mental note to return and conquer those trails another time. There's no way we're missing out on exploring these paths that promise breathtaking views and adventures galore.
As we ventured deeper into this remote area, civilization became a distant memory. And when hunger struck, our only dining option was The Volcano House. It's a restaurant and hotel strategically perched overlooking the crater. Now, Tom, being the adventurous soul that he is, jokingly hoped for a volcanic eruption while we were dining. Cue my horrified expression! I mean, experiencing nature's fury up close might be thrilling, but let's save that for another time, Tom!
The sight of the crater was undeniably impressive. A giant hole in the ground might sound a bit simplistic, but trust me, it's a sight that leaves you in awe. Witnessing the sheer power of nature's forces displayed in such a grand scale is truly humbling.
As we bid farewell to the volcanic park, we stumbled upon lava tubes – nature's own tunnels carved through solidified lava. Talk about a novelty experience! Driving to these tubes and walking through them felt like stepping into a mysterious underworld. It's a thrilling escapade that adds an extra dash of adventure to your volcanic expedition.
So, if you're ever in Hawaii and want to dive into the world of volcanoes, hikes, and surreal experiences, make sure to explore these wonders. From breathtaking hikes to dining by a crater and walking through lava tubes, it's a journey that promises both excitement and a deeper appreciation for the forces that shape our planet.
Attention adventurers! Heading south from Kona? Buckle up for a road trip through wildly diverse landscapes that'll keep you on the edge of your seat. Picture this: cruising along a highway, suddenly surrounded by surreal stretches of jagged, hardened lava—like scenes from a post-apocalyptic movie! It's an otherworldly sight, making you wonder if a tractor went berserk and left volcanic rock piles everywhere. But hold on tight! Just as swiftly, the landscape transforms into lush, vibrant greenery, like a nature's embrace. It's a thrilling visual journey—one minute in a rocky wasteland, the next in a vivid paradise! This contrast is mind-boggling and utterly fascinating, a plot twist only Hawaii can pull off. The thrill of this rollercoaster ride through landscapes adds excitement to your journey, a visual adventure with surprises at every volcanic bend. Nature lovers, thrill-seekers—mark this drive as a must-do on your Hawaiian itinerary!
For foodies and beach lovers en route to Punaluʻu, make these spots a priority: the delightful Punaluʻu Bake Shop and the mesmerizing Black Sand Beach! At the bake shop, indulge in heavenly sweet bread and locally roasted coffee—a treasure trove for your taste buds. Don't miss their charming gifts and treats for loved ones! Then, a breezy 20-minute drive leads you to the renowned Black Sand Beach—an otherworldly experience with dark volcanic sand against an azure ocean backdrop. Stroll along the shore, feel the soft black sand, and marvel at the sight. Keep an eye out for Hawaiian green sea turtles, basking or swimming in the crystal-clear waters—a prime reason to visit Punaluʻu! So, treat your taste buds, take in stunning vistas, and create unforgettable memories in Punaluʻu's perfect day!
Southern Most Point of the United States
South Point, Hawaii, offers a serene escape from the bustling crowds elsewhere on the Big Island, allowing you to immerse yourself in the vast beauty and might of the ocean. It's a trip worth taking, serving as a great stopover en route to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park or as a standalone day trip. Don't miss the chance to hike to Mahana Bay and witness the striking Green Sand Beach—it's an adventure waiting to unfold!
Despite the strong winds, the day was stunningly clear. We strolled from the cliffs to the shore, marveling at the sight of the dried coral scattered along the beach. Take a peek at these breathtaking views!
On every trip, we reserve one special dress-up dinner, and this time was no different. We took a scenic hour-long drive north to the Hilton Waikoloa Village, home to the restaurant of our choice. Having made reservations in advance, I informed them about our birthdays and anniversary, and we were treated incredibly well, scoring the ideal table with the most magnificent view!
Timing our dinner just before sunset turned out to be a stroke of genius. The breathtaking views we captured during one of the prettiest sunsets of our trip made the experience truly unforgettable!

The food was amazing!
Enjoy these sunset photos!
Hilo
We were only on the Hilo side of the island for a few hours after spending time at the Volcano National Park.
I have to be honest that I was disapointed after how beatiful and clean everything is on the Kona side.
Hilo has homeless encampments everywhere near the beach and in on every corner in town. It didn't feel that safe to walk around so after having dinner we decided to make our way back to Kona as it would a 2 hour drive.

The two-hour drive might seem straightforward, but let me tell you, it turned out to be one of the most nerve-wracking experiences I've had. Traveling up Saddle Road initially seemed fine, with well-paved roads. However, as the sun started to set and we ascended, we found ourselves engulfed in a thick, eerie cloud bank that blanketed the island. It became pitch black, visibility was minimal, and every forward step was uncertain. We had to drive incredibly slow and cautiously, unable to see beyond a single car length ahead. The worst part? The road's direction was veiled by the clouds. After an hour of white-knuckle driving, we finally emerged from the clouds, revealing a breathtaking sight.
Unfortunately, I couldn't stop for pictures, but let me paint the picture for you. Picture yourself atop a mountain, gazing at the horizon where a stunning line of vibrant orange meets the deep blue sky. It felt like we were perched on the edge of the atmosphere, with bright, beautiful stars shining above.
The relief of breaking free from the cloud bank was immense. We made it back to our hotel safe and sound, feeling grateful for the incredible sight and the safe return.
Exploring off-the-beaten-path excursions adds a unique dimension to any trip. While beaches are plentiful on an island, discovering hidden gems and less-known adventures can be just as rewarding—if not more so! I'm glad I could share these experiences with you in this post.
