Furniture Flip #2

Have you ever had a project or passion that you love, yet, you would also love to beat it with a bat!

You may be thinking, “Wow Deborah, that’s a bit intense.”. Okay, agreed! I hope you understand what I mean, hear me out.

I am waist deep learning how to flip furniture. This is what I have learned so far and what I wish that people on YouTube talked about more.

1) You NEED patience! Patience with yourself and what you are learning and patience for the piece itself.

2) If you have never worked on furniture before (ie: sanding, priming, painting, and sealing), DO NOT expect to finish your piece in a few days. You may see people on YouTube who are churning out pieces in a few days. You watch them paint and see how easy their paint goes onto the piece, how it self levels, how they barely have to do any touch ups, and it looks like their fairy godmother waved a wand and the piece was done. Well, that has NOT happened for me yet.

3) Chalk paint is not easy to use if you have never used it before and do not know what to expect when using it. Do not let people’s YouTube videos fool you into thinking Chalk paint is easy to use. There is a lot more sanding involved when using Chalk paint if you don’t want the “chalky” textured look.

5 redo’s later (sanding everything off and starting over)… this is what I ended up with.

Now, someone is probably asking, “Wait, why did you have to start over 5 times?”.

Times 1 & 2: was me trying to figure out the chalk paint and why it was drying the way it was. Time 3: One time was painting in direct sunlight (didn’t know you couldn’t do that) which ended in lumpy and clumpy painted dried on the table.

Time 4: was to fix some random oily circles that kept appearing on my table day after day. Still have no clue how they got there. Sanding was the only way to get them to stop.

Time 5: Was when I was done with painting all together and thought I could just stain the table. Only to find there were some flaws in the wood that the stain would just point out. So back to painting I went…

Even thought this project took me well over 2 months. I did actually have fun in the end. I learned so many new lessons and have a lot more painting knowledge to take me into the next project, and the next after that.

You can now check out the table at Facebook Marketplace using the link above.

Can’t wait to show you flip #3!
