Furniture Flip #4 - Dresser/Cabinet Converted To A Sideboard & Bar
Sometimes ideas will flow through you mind that turn into absolute GOLD!
I have to give God all the Glory because I honestly don't think this was my type of thought or creativity at all!
When my friend Erin first gave me this Dresser/Cabinet I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it. I couldn't pull it off as a dresser because it seemed more like a cabinet than anything else.

So I decided to just start taking off the doors, hardware and drawers so I could see it bare and try to drum up some creativity.

That creativity came fast! I knew it couldn't be my thought because of how extensive I saw it in my head.
I saw it being open on the bottom, a built in wine bottle storage cube on the left side opening and in the main middle opening a hanging stemware holder and spaces for bottles. I saw wallpaper lining the back, nice drawer pulls and black legs that angled to the side.

Unfortunately, like many other projects, I decided to dive into the world of YouTube and give my left over Chalk paint one last try. Oh BOY!!! NEVER AGAIN!! I think I have said it before, I will say it for my final time... I DISLIKE Chalk Paint!!!!!!!!!! (That gets a lot of exclamation points.)
So just like my desk, I had to sand all of the Chalk paint off. Now, I don't mind sanding one bit, but sanding because you made a stupid decision and have to redo something... NOT FUN!
Once that was accomplished I decided I was going to "go for it" with a bold, bright, FUN color!
Emerald Shores by HGTV Home/Sherwin Williams Infinity Paint is what I settled on. It sure is bright and fun!

The thing I truly enjoy about this paint is its ability to have full coverage, self level and dry fast.
My next "phase" in what felt like a never ending process to get to this point (about a month), was to wallpaper the insides of the cabinet. Well, this was my first time wallpapering anything. Let's just say that practice makes perfect.
Note to self: Do not use an Ex-acto knife thinking you are a "pro" without testing how to use it first.

I made countless mistakes on my cutting which made me have to completely pivot my design. Pretty much I had to find a way to cover up my mistakes. UGH!! Practice Deborah, practice!!!
So once all the wallpaper was in the "thinking cap" went on.

Now of course in this picture that corner doesn't look too horrible, but I promise you it looked bad. I knew in my heart I couldn't charge what I wanted to for the bar if the corners looked like that.
I wanted to think of something that could help make the wallpaper and the emerald green paint pop even more.
The idea that came was amazing!!!
So we were off to Home Depot to get some quarter rounds of wood and get to staining.

Another thing that happened and I had to pivot from is due to the lip in the smaller cabinet space on the left of the bar, I couldn't build the X shaped wine rack. So I had to find an alternative solution that would work. I got researching and found this option at Target for 50% off. I measured the space and it looked as though it would fit.

I was so excited at this point, for the first time during the whole project it felt like the finish line was near.
I test measured the wine rack in the space and it fit perfectly! Even snug! I didn't have to secure it down with anything. The wine bottles will do a fine job of that.
Once the quarter rounds were stained (I already had a stain on hand that matched the wine holder above... yeah!!) we measured every space and used our miter box and hand saw to cut everything to size. God bless Tom for doing all those cuts, the top inside corners needed to be less than an inch and so precise. He was so patient with the whole process!
Once the cuts were done I dry fit all the pieces to make sure everything fit right before I started gluing everything in with some wood glue. I used painters tape to hold everything in as I waited overnight for the glue to dry.

I have to be honest that I was a little nervous pulling off the tape the next day. I was so hoping that nothing would happen to the wallpaper after all that work. Nothing did, thank God!
So here is what everything looked like once the tape came off.

During this time my wine glass rack also came in the mail from Amazon. However, due to the lip in the larger cabinet area we had to use wood to build up a surface for the wine glass rack to sit on. So once again we were off to Home Depot to find a solution!
We settled on 1x2 board that only cost a few dollars (thank God, especially since wood is so unreasonably priced right now, damn Covid and people jacking up their prices!).
We measured the wine glass rack holder length wise and cut the wood to match. Tom also added 45 degree cuts on each side of the wood boards to give a little design element to it. Then I got to staining them and let them dry overnight.
The easiest way for us to install the boards, make sure they were level and get the wine glass rack screwed into the boards was to flip the bar upside down. You know we both held our breath for a moment on that maneuver. We didn't want anything to happen, so we laid down moving blankets and flipped it in two stages to make sure we had a good hand hold on it.
We measure where we wanted the boards, made sure they were level, and screwed them in.
We had also found these cool screw caps at Home Depot that you screw your nail into and then you cover the cap over the nail head. (People out there just truly think of everything, don't they.)
What a cool design element to make the wine glass rack look even more polished.
Here is the final product!

Now it was time to do a final wipe down and fix any little spots that didn't look right on the paint.
Well, somehow, the side of the bar had gotten scratched so I had to re-paint and re-topcoat it. I was NOT too jazzed about that. From that point onward the full bar stays covered with moving blankets until it gets sold.
After that it was time to bring it inside the house to stage it!
For the first time in this furniture flipping process I feel so accomplished!
My vision came to life! Now, I cannot wait to see what I can create next.
